Tooting has been a place of settlement for centuries going back to before the times of the Saxons. The meaning of the name is Anglo-Saxon, but to be exact there is much debate, with one meaning being "the people of Tota". The Romans built a road through Tooting, connecting London and Chichester and the High Street today is a continuation of that exact Roman road.
The main development of the area happened in Victorian, Edwardian times and into 20s and 30s which saw a Large Library, Cinema and Hospital spring up in the area. Public transport links for the centre of London comes in the form of 2 underground stations called Tooting Bec and Tooting Broadway and a National Railway Station: Tooting railway station.
For leisure there Tooting Commons in the north part and it is a large open area consisting of 2 parks; Graveney Common and Bec Common. Also 2 football teams, greyhound race track and 2 indoor markets, with the larger, Broadway Market with over 90 stalls and has been going strong since 1936.
